Stop & Shop Continues Store Closures

The grocery chain Stop & Shop is continuing its trend of closing locations as it works to improve business performance. Approximately three dozen stores have been shuttered over the last 18 months. Four new locations are now scheduled to close by the end of 2026, reflecting a broader pattern of the company's shrinking footprint across the northeastern United States.

The latest round of closures will affect stores located at 553 S Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge, NJ; 2360 Lakewood Road in Toms River, NJ; 219 Elm Street in Westfield, NJ; and 215 E Main Street in Clinton, CT. These four sites join the roughly three dozen underperforming locations that have closed since November 2024. Stop & Shop operates over 350 stores across Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

A spokesperson for Stop & Shop stated that each closure decision was made on a case-by-case basis. The company indicated that these decisions are not part of a broader plan to close multiple locations and that no further closures are planned for these markets at this time. While the company aims to streamline its operations, the closures can have tangible effects on local communities, potentially leaving some towns with fewer nearby grocery options.

In addition to its retail offerings, Stop & Shop provides pharmacy services and home delivery. The company has stated that affected employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other company locations. These actions are part of a wider strategy to optimize the store network and enhance profitability in regions where performance has not met expectations.
