Stratolaunch Acquires Boeing 777 to Expand Hypersonic Test Infrastructure
Hypersonics company Stratolaunch has purchased a Boeing 777 aircraft to increase its hypersonic flight testing capacity. The acquisition supports the company's Talon-A platform and enhances global operational readiness.
Stratolaunch, a company focused on hypersonics, has acquired a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft to expand its fleet of carrier aircraft for its Talon-A autonomous, reusable hypersonic flight test platforms. The addition aims to meet growing customer demand for hypersonic testing services and enhance the company's global reach and flight capacity.
The acquisition brings Stratolaunch's carrier aircraft fleet to three, complementing the existing Spirit of Mojave and Roc. The company anticipates a 35% increase in flight capacity, enabling continuous launch readiness and faster scaling of operations. The Boeing 777 will also bolster Stratolaunch's global deployment capabilities, supporting missions worldwide.
"As demand for hypersonic technologies continues to grow, we're building the operational scale to make routine hypersonic testing a reality for our customers," said Stratolaunch President and CEO Zachary Krevor. He highlighted that incorporating the Boeing 777 enhances flight flexibility and long-term capacity, crucial for accelerating hypersonic innovation.
The aircraft will undergo modifications to enable air launch of Stratolaunch's Talon-A hypersonic test vehicles from its fuselage, with completion expected in 2027. Stratolaunch's air-launch method offers advantages such as extended range, lower costs, and more realistic flight profiles compared to ground-based systems. The company recently achieved over 10 successful hypersonic flights with its Talon-A platform.
