Stripe Adds AI Usage-Based Billing Features
Payment processor Stripe has introduced new AI-focused metering and billing capabilities, allowing software companies to charge for AI usage based on consumption, a shift from traditional seat-based SaaS models.

Stripe, a leading payment processing company, has launched new features designed to help software companies bill for AI usage. The update addresses the challenges of traditional Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) subscription models in the face of increasingly AI-driven products.
Traditionally, SaaS pricing was based on per-seat licenses, which assumed usage was tied to human activity. However, AI applications can perform thousands of tasks autonomously in the background, consuming resources and driving up costs for providers without direct user interaction. This disconnect between fixed subscription revenue and variable AI operational costs has become a significant issue.
Stripe's new capabilities allow developers to stream granular data on AI activity, such as token processing and API calls, directly into the Stripe platform. Stripe then meters this activity and converts it into billable events. This enables businesses to adopt consumption-based pricing, usage tiers, or metered add-ons alongside existing subscriptions.
The platform also allows vendors to set a markup on underlying AI model costs from providers like OpenAI or Google. This feature automatically adjusts pricing as model costs fluctuate, providing a more sustainable revenue model for companies integrating AI into their offerings. By aligning costs with actual AI consumption, Stripe aims to help businesses monetize AI features effectively and ensure fair pricing for their customers.
