Stripe Invests in Climate Technology and Health Initiatives, Fosters Startups

Online payments company Stripe, valued at $159 billion, is significantly broadening its technological and societal impact beyond its core payment processing services. The company has committed substantial funds to new initiatives focused on developing carbon removal technologies and eradicating rare respiratory diseases.

Stripe's Frontier initiative has raised over $1.8 billion to support the advancement of carbon removal technologies. What began as a $1 million test has evolved into a major funding mechanism, having already allocated nearly $700 million to 53 projects. Additionally, Stripe has launched the Intercept initiative, aiming to eliminate respiratory diseases, with an initial commitment of $500 million from partners including OpenAI and Anthropic.

These ventures reflect the company's wider mission to foster entrepreneurship and drive technological innovation, according to CEO Patrick Collison. Stripe has also become known as a "founder factory," spinning out numerous successful startups. Notably, OpenAI and Anthropic were co-founded by former Stripe employees.

Furthermore, Stripe's Atlas product, which simplifies business incorporation and payment setup, now accounts for 25% of all Delaware corporations. The company is also an active investor, participating in 89 startup funding rounds over the past decade, including investments in corporate spend management platforms and neobanks.

Over its 15-year history, Stripe, founded by brothers Patrick and John Collison, has grown from a single product to over 30 payment and financial solutions. The company facilitates trillions of dollars in global commerce annually, with its broader influence on technology and entrepreneurship widely recognized within industry circles.
