Strong El Niño Threatens California Coast with Floods and Erosion

The anticipated strong 2026 Super El Niño weather pattern is poised to cause significant damage to California's coast, potentially leading to higher sea levels and widespread flooding. Oceanographers predict the event will raise sea levels along the coast by about a foot by mid-next month.
This phenomenon occurs as the climate pattern pushes water from Mexico and Central America northwards towards the U.S. coastline. This action can trigger "Kelvin waves," which are unusual, trapped oscillations of sea level.
In addition to these elevated sea levels and Kelvin waves, California is also experiencing regular "king tides," which are astronomically high tides. The convergence of these factors heightens the risk of coastal erosion and severe flooding, particularly in low-lying areas around the San Francisco Bay.
While a strong El Niño does not guarantee increased precipitation for California, this particular event is expected to raise the likelihood of experiencing a wetter winter season.
