Düsseldorf – Alzheimer's disease affects short-term memory even in its early stages. Therefore, consistent routines and established procedures can provide crucial support for patients and their families.

The Alzheimer Research Initiative (AFI) emphasizes the importance of preserving familiar ways of doing things for as long as possible. Fixed routines, such as those involved in dressing, can strengthen feelings of security and trust. The AFI suggests encouraging patients to dress themselves as long as they are able, while caregivers can assist by preparing clothing and ensuring the correct sequence for dressing.

More complex tasks should be broken down into smaller, manageable steps to avoid causing distress. A step-by-step approach helps patients maintain an overview of the situation, thereby preventing feelings of anxiety and panic. This is particularly relevant for personal hygiene, where focusing on the immediate task at hand is most effective.

AFI provides a free guide, "Leben mit der Diagnose Alzheimer" (Living with an Alzheimer's Diagnosis), offering further information and practical advice. Since 1995, the initiative has supported Alzheimer's research and public education, funding 230 research projects and distributing approximately 800,000 guides.
