Students, particularly those heading to college, are advised to consider investing in more powerful laptops, even if it means a higher upfront cost. While functional laptops can be found under $500 and good ones around $700, spending more can yield better build quality and performance that will last through several years of study. Many users have found older MacBook Air models from 2020 to still be highly capable.
The recommendation leans towards Macs with Apple Silicon or Windows laptops featuring processors from Intel or AMD released in the last few years (2022 or 2023 models onward). Snapdragon X-powered devices are also viable, provided they meet the user's software and gaming needs, especially concerning Windows on Arm compatibility.
Ideally, laptops should come with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, particularly for college students. While 8GB of RAM is often sufficient for macOS, Windows laptops may struggle with this amount.
