Study: 92% of Finnish Generation Z Women Experience Appearance Pressures

A recent study indicates that a significant majority, 92% of Finnish women aged 16–28, experience appearance-related pressures at least occasionally. Across the entire age group, one-third have faced discrimination, bullying, or criticism related to their appearance.

The survey, conducted by Lumene Group in partnership with Mieli ry in December 2024, gathered over a thousand responses from 16–28-year-olds in Finland. According to the findings, these pressures significantly impact mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Only about ten percent of individuals experiencing such pressures have sought help.

The pressures, often linked to body image, can result in avoidance of social situations and diminished self-esteem. Free self-expression through clothing and identity is perceived as challenging, with many feeling pressure solely based on their looks.

Lumene Group has donated €15,000 to support the operations of Mieli ry's Sekasin chat service. This funding will enable approximately 1,500 new conversations with young people. The company also offers its employees the opportunity to train as volunteers for the Sekasin chat during working hours.
