Study: Bicarbonate-rich mineral water helps with heartburn
A new study indicates that drinking bicarbonate-rich mineral water significantly reduces the frequency and duration of heartburn symptoms.

A recent study conducted by Informationsbüro Heilwasser suggests that mineral water high in bicarbonate can effectively alleviate heartburn symptoms. The German research involved 50 patients experiencing at least twice-weekly heartburn episodes, who consumed 1.5 liters of this specific mineral water daily for six weeks.
The findings reported a significant improvement for the majority of participants. Ninety percent of the individuals experienced a substantial decrease in both the frequency and duration of their heartburn. On average, the participants' heartburn episodes reduced from seven times a week to just two, with the average duration shortening from 35 minutes to nine minutes.
Bicarbonate is known for its alkaline properties, which enable it to neutralize acids. This natural buffering capacity is believed to be the primary mechanism behind its effectiveness. The mineral water used in the study contained 1,775 mg of bicarbonate per liter, a concentration comparable to what is recommended for such therapeutic purposes.
Participants also reported a general improvement in their well-being, with 80 percent feeling significantly better. The study, published by Informationsbüro Heilwasser, reinforces earlier research highlighting bicarbonate-rich waters as a natural alternative to over-the-counter antacids for managing mild to moderate heartburn, with good tolerability reported by all participants.
