Study: Birdsong Can Alleviate Anxiety and Reduce Paranoia

A new study from researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany suggests that listening to birdsong can significantly improve mental well-being. In the study, 295 participants listened to either six minutes of traffic noise or birdsong. Assessments of mental health before and after listening revealed that birdsong reduced participants' anxiety and paranoia. This effect was observed regardless of whether multiple bird species or just a single one were heard. Traffic noise, conversely, was found to worsen participants' moods and even exacerbate depressive symptoms. The researchers hypothesize that the positive effect of birdsong may stem from its subconscious association with an intact and healthy natural environment. This creates a sense of security and well-being, which can serve as a relief from psychological stressors. However, the study did not find a direct impact of birdsong on existing depressive states. Emil Stobbe, a lead researcher on the study, suggests that birdsong could be used for the prevention of mental health issues. Even listening to digital birdsong might offer a simple and accessible intervention. Stobbe believes the effect could be even more pronounced in natural settings than in laboratory experiments. Concurrently, researchers from King's College London analyzed data from the "Urban Mind" app, which collected information on urban dwellers' well-being. Between 2018 and 2021, 1,292 participants regularly reported on their bird sightings and mood. The results showed a clear correlation between seeing or hearing birds and improved well-being, even when accounting for environmental factors like vegetation and water bodies. This reinforces that birds themselves have a positive impact on human well-being.
