Study compares Gradientech QuickMIC and EUCAST RAST performance in resistant isolates
A 2026 study in Microbiology Spectrum evaluated the performance of Gradientech’s QuickMIC system against EUCAST RAST in detecting highly resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

A comparative study published in Microbiology Spectrum has analyzed the performance of the QuickMIC system, developed by Gradientech, against the established EUCAST rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (RAST) method. The research focused on 101 isolates of highly resistant Gram-negative bacteria, specifically targeting carbapenem-resistant strains.
Data indicated that QuickMIC yielded a mean time-to-result of 3 hours and 44 minutes. At the four-hour mark, 94.1% of QuickMIC results were interpretable, compared to 69.6% for EUCAST RAST. The researchers noted that while QuickMIC provides quantitative MIC values, EUCAST RAST delivers categorical interpretations, representing a fundamental difference in the clinical data provided by each method.
Both technologies demonstrated low rates of very major discrepancies, suggesting high reliability for diagnostic use. The findings highlight that the effectiveness of rapid AST systems depends on both speed and the ability to generate usable data early in the diagnostic process.
