Study: Diet Drinks as Effective as Water for Weight Loss

A new two-year clinical trial published in the British Journal of Nutrition indicates that artificially sweetened beverages are as effective as water for weight management. The study found no evidence that these drinks increase appetite or cause metabolic harm.

The SWITCH trial involved 493 adults with overweight or obesity who participated in a structured behavioral weight management program. Participants were randomly assigned to drink either water or diet beverages daily. After 104 weeks, both groups showed similar weight loss and improvements in waist circumference, body composition, and several metabolic measures.

Researchers at the University of Liverpool called the study the longest and most comprehensive randomized controlled trial of non-nutritive sweetened (NNS) drinks to date. The findings did not support previous concerns that NNS drinks could negatively impact long-term metabolic health or interfere with appetite regulation.

The study concluded that participant behavior, rather than the beverage choice, was the primary driver of weight loss. Those who consumed NNS drinks did not report increased hunger or cravings, suggesting these beverages can be a viable option for individuals pursuing weight management.
