New research suggests the Chicxulub asteroid impact generated intense heat that ignited global wildfires and incinerated life on Earth, contributing significantly to the extinction of dinosaurs.

Approximately 66 million years ago, the asteroid impact at Chicxulub created a massive dust cloud that superheated the atmosphere, effectively charbroiling organisms unable to find shelter and igniting widespread wildfires. This event is now understood as a primary driver in the extinction of three-quarters of Earth's plant and animal species, including the dinosaurs.

The prevailing theory, the Alvarez hypothesis, initially proposed that a massive asteroid or comet impact caused the mass extinction. This was supported by findings of high iridium concentrations, a common asteroid element, in geological layers dating to the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.

The impact site is widely accepted to be the Chicxulub crater on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The impactor was large enough to trigger a megatsunami and release energy estimated to be over a billion times that of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This latest study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, focuses on the immediate thermal aftermath of the impact. Researchers argue that the intense heat and ensuing fires played a direct and significant role in the mass extinction event.
