Study finds one in three UK consumers switch to competitors if calls are not answered within 60 seconds

A new survey of 2,046 UK adults indicates that businesses face immediate customer churn if they fail to answer incoming calls promptly. Findings from YouGov reveal that 37% of consumers are prepared to contact a competitor if their call remains unanswered after 60 seconds.

The research suggests that modern consumers have little patience for traditional voicemail, with only 6% stating they would leave a message instead of waiting. Nearly a quarter of respondents (24%) indicated they would switch to an alternative contact channel rather than stay on the line.

Stuart Wilson, Director of Operations at Answer4u, stated that a company’s first impression begins the moment a customer dials a number. The data underscores the operational pressure on small and professional services firms, where missing an inbound call is often synonymous with losing a potential sales lead or client opportunity.
