Study finds out-of-home advertising drives higher online engagement than traditional media
Nielsen data indicates that out-of-home advertising generates four times more online activity per dollar spent compared to TV, radio, and print.

A study conducted by Nielsen highlights the efficacy of out-of-home (OOH) advertising in bridging the gap between physical and digital consumer touchpoints. Although OOH accounts for approximately seven percent of total advertising spend in the U.S., it is responsible for 26 percent of gross search activations initiated by offline media, including television, radio, and print.
The findings reveal that OOH media delivers four times the expected level of online activations relative to its advertising expenditure. This efficiency is particularly notable regarding search queries and social media engagements on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, positioning the medium as a primary driver of digital behavior.
The research underscores a shift in consumer habits, with 68 percent of mobile usage occurring on the go. Nearly half of surveyed adults reported using an internet search engine to seek information after viewing an OOH advertisement. For advertisers, these metrics suggest that integrating OOH into digital strategies can strengthen the overall consumer journey.
