Study: Gen Z Alcohol Consumption Matches Other Age Groups
A new report challenges the notion of Gen Z's low alcohol consumption. Legal-age Gen Z individuals are drinking at nearly the same rate as the general population.

Common assumptions about Gen Z's lower alcohol consumption have been challenged by a new study. According to research by the IWSR, a leading alcohol industry data provider, legal-age Gen Z individuals consume alcohol at a rate comparable to the rest of the adult population. The findings contradict previous perceptions suggesting this generation is more averse to drinking due to health concerns and cost.
The report indicates that 74 percent of legal-age Gen Zers consume alcohol, an increase of eight percentage points from three years prior. This figure is close to the overall adult population's drinking rate of 76 percent, suggesting that Gen Z's habits are not an outlier.
Overall alcohol consumption rates in the U.S. have been declining, with some analyses pointing to younger generations as a primary driver. However, the IWSR study suggests that moderate consumption is a trend that spans across multiple generations, rather than being confined to the youth.
"The narrative that Gen Z is the generation of moderation is now conclusively debunked," stated Marten Lodewijks, president and managing director of IWSR. "While Gen Z consumers are creating new patterns for engaging with beverage alcohol, the evidence demonstrates that Gen Z consumers enjoy drinking at roughly the same levels as the rest of society." This shift in understanding could significantly influence the approximately $2.7 billion beverage market.
