Study: Humans Developing Feelings for AI Companions
Psychologists are researching the phenomenon of individuals forming deep relational bonds with AI-powered chatbots designed to mimic human interaction.

Heise Gruppe GmbH & Co. KG, a technology publisher, reports on research exploring the increasing tendency for humans to develop emotional connections with AI chatbots. These bots, often designed to resemble human partners, provide continuous interaction and emotional support, leading some users to experience genuine-seeming feelings.
Researchers highlight that AI chatbots emulate human communication styles, fostering social cues and emotional responses that can develop into deep attachments. Jessica Szczuka, a psychologist from the University of Duisburg-Essen, notes that such reactions are not uncommon, with some users reporting experiencing physical symptoms akin to love.
Platforms like Replika, offering customizable AI companions, have garnered millions of users worldwide. The report references a study indicating that users often turn to AI companions when human relationships are perceived as unsatisfying, seeking emotional or physical fulfillment.
The Heise report emphasizes that while users acknowledge interacting with an AI, they frequently attribute human qualities and expectations to these bots, treating them as partners with distinct hobbies and challenges. This trend prompts consideration of AI's evolving role in human relationships.
