Study identifies arterial embolization as potential treatment for chronic knee pain

A study conducted by Charité–Universitätsmedizin Berlin and published in the journal Radiology suggests that genicular artery embolization (GAE) offers a viable treatment path for patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis who have failed to improve with steroid injections or pain medication. The minimally invasive procedure targets abnormal blood vessels around the joint to suppress inflammation and pain signaling.

Data collected one year post-procedure indicated that the median pain score among participants fell from 7 to 3 on a 10-point scale. This finding highlights a potential therapeutic gap-filler between localized injections and total joint replacement surgery, according to lead researcher Florian Nima Fleckenstein.

While the results demonstrate short-term efficacy in pain management, Fleckenstein noted that the procedure’s ability to slow the actual progression of the disease remains unproven. Further research is required to determine whether this vascular intervention constitutes a long-term disease-modifying treatment or primarily a symptomatic management strategy.
