Study Links Time-Restricted Eating to Cognitive Benefits
Confining daily meals and snacks to a nine-hour window may improve cognitive function in older adults, according to a new study.

A recent study suggests that limiting daily meals and snacks to a nine-hour window could offer significant benefits for cognitive health in older adults, potentially reducing the risk of dementia.
The small clinical trial, part of a weight-loss program for overweight or obese older women, observed modest cognitive improvements in participants who adopted a time-restricted eating schedule. The findings, presented at the NUTRITION 2026 meeting, indicate that beyond weight loss, avoiding late-night eating and consuming food within an 8-9 hour period may provide additional cognitive advantages compared to a typical 12-hour eating window, according to principal investigator Dr. Sue Shapses from Rutgers University.
The study involved 47 women aged 50-79 who were overweight or obese. Participants were guided to reduce their daily caloric intake by 500 calories over six months. Within this group, 26 women adhered to a nine-hour eating window, typically between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., while the remainder consumed meals over a 12-hour span.
Results showed similar weight loss in both groups, averaging around 15 pounds. However, cognitive tests revealed that the group practicing time-restricted eating performed better than their counterparts who did not limit their eating schedule.
While preliminary due to the small sample size, larger studies could confirm that controlling eating times is an effective strategy for safeguarding cognitive health and curbing late-night snacking habits. This finding may influence the food and health sectors by offering new approaches to brain health maintenance.
