BERLIN – The Nespresso capsule coffee system demonstrates a favorable environmental impact due to its efficient resource utilization when compared to other preparation methods, according to a recent study conducted by independent experts at Quantis and verified by TÜV Rheinland.

The study, which assessed the environmental impacts of various coffee preparation systems, concluded that coffee cultivation and preparation have a more significant environmental effect than packaging. The Nespresso system's advantages lie in its precise portioning of coffee and water, which prevents waste. Furthermore, Nespresso machines consume only the electricity necessary to brew a single cup, leading to highly efficient resource use by consumers.

Resource conservation is particularly important, as coffee cultivation significantly influences the overall environmental footprint. Traditional filter coffee methods often involve imprecise dosing, leading to excess coffee grounds or brewed coffee being discarded. The Nespresso system's exact per-cup portioning makes it more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional filter coffee machines. When compared to fully automatic machines, the Nespresso system also uses less energy per cup, especially those without an integrated auto-off function.

Nespresso chose aluminum for its capsules due to its ability to protect coffee aromas from environmental factors like light, air, and humidity, as well as its recyclability. Recycled aluminum can be used to create new products such as bicycle frames or window profiles. While packaging plays a smaller role in the overall environmental assessment compared to cultivation and preparation, recycling Nespresso capsules significantly improves the system's environmental performance.

Nespresso has long been committed to sustainability in coffee cultivation. Its AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, launched in 2003 with the Rainforest Alliance, supports over 70,000 coffee farmers across twelve countries in adopting sustainable farming practices. Farmers involved in the program receive premium prices above the market rate for their sustainably produced, high-quality coffee.
