Study: Readers Prefer AI-Written Stories Over Human Ones

A new study indicates that readers may favor content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) over human-produced material, despite a prevailing reluctance towards AI in creative writing.

The study, which involved 1,682 adult participants, found that individuals rated AI-written stories as higher in quality and more engaging than those penned by humans. When readers were mistakenly told that AI-generated stories were human-written, these pieces received even higher scores, suggesting an implicit bias against AI content regardless of its actual merit.

Deena Skolnick Weisberg, a researcher at Villanova University's department of psychological and brain sciences, commented that public assumptions about AI's capabilities are often outdated. She explained that creative writing is typically perceived to require uniquely human attributes like emotional understanding and lived experience, leading to an underestimation of AI's potential.

Weisberg speculates that the appeal of AI writing may stem from its clarity and directness, making it easier to process. Human-written narratives are often more subtle and complex, which can demand greater cognitive effort from the reader. This may explain why more predictable AI content resonates with a wider audience.

While AI tools continue to advance, Weisberg emphasizes that they do not replace human writers. She suggests there is room for both AI-generated and collaborative human-AI works, but the process of human creativity and self-expression retains its intrinsic value.
