Study suggests link between wearable technology and smoking reduction

A peer-reviewed observational study conducted by WHOOP tracked 12,678 new users over 72 weeks, finding that daily tobacco use dropped from 55.1% to 27.2%. Participants who consistently engaged with their health data reported higher success in reducing tobacco consumption, which was also associated with improvements in resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep duration.

While the findings suggest a potential role for wearables in behavior change, researchers caution that the data relies on self-reporting and does not definitively prove that the device itself caused the cessation. The study did not categorize specific tobacco products, nor did it track external cessation interventions used by participants.

Industry analysts suggest that wearables are most effective when paired with structured, evidence-based support programs. By providing immediate feedback on how lifestyle choices affect biological markers, these devices may help transition health goals from abstract intentions to actionable data-driven processes.
