Subaru Recalls Over 541,000 SUVs for Incorrect Weight Labeling
Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling more than 541,000 SUVs due to incorrectly labeled gross axle weight ratings. The error could lead to vehicles being overloaded.

Subaru of America, Inc. is initiating a voluntary safety recall for over 541,000 SUVs identified with incorrect gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) on their certification labels. This discrepancy poses a potential safety risk if drivers rely on the inaccurate figures when loading their vehicles.
The recall affects specific 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid models, 2025-2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid models, and 2019-2026 Ascent SUVs. In total, 541,237 vehicles across the United States are included in this recall, as reported by the automaker to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Subaru has stated that no injuries or crashes have been linked to this labeling issue thus far. The issue stems from an incorrect GAWR, a federally mandated specification indicating the maximum weight each axle can safely support.
The NHTSA brought a potential compliance concern to Subaru's attention in May. Following an internal investigation, Subaru decided to submit a formal recall request on July 7. The NHTSA noted that an incorrect GAWR label could result in an overloaded vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
Subaru plans to offer a simple remedy for the affected vehicles. The company will notify owners with further instructions on how to schedule the repair once parts are available at authorized dealerships.
