Sudan's Local Responders Recognized for Humanitarian Work

The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) has recognized grassroots responders in Sudan for their vital humanitarian work amidst the country's ongoing conflict and famine. The Clinton Global Citizen Award was presented at the CGI's annual meeting in New York.

Additionally, "Funders for Mutual Aid in Sudan," an international coalition that has channeled over $16 million to support local efforts, announced a commitment to mobilize an additional $5 million by the end of 2027. These funds are designated for Sudanese-led response and recovery initiatives.

The coalition, coordinated by the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), has emphasized the importance of supporting local actors who are closest to the crisis and best understand the needs. The award highlights what can be achieved when philanthropy trusts local leaders and provides flexible resources.

Since the civil war began in April 2023, Sudan has faced the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis. Over 20 million people are experiencing acute hunger, with 200,000 estimated to be in famine. Local networks, such as the "Emergency Response Rooms," continue to provide food, education, and essential services despite immense challenges and risks.

Local responders, like Hanin Ahmed of Old Omdurman Emergency Response Rooms, are appealing to the international community for increased attention to Sudan's situation. The award and new funding serve as significant acknowledgments of their ongoing efforts.
