Sungrow and BW ESS commission 1,243 MWh battery storage site in 20 days

Sungrow has successfully commissioned a 350 MW / 1,243 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Hams Hall in the West Midlands, UK. The facility, operated in partnership with BW ESS, transitioned from grid connection to commercial operations in 20 days.

The project utilizes Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 technology. The rapid timeline was achieved by deploying dedicated engineering teams to the site, allowing for immediate troubleshooting and coordination between BW ESS and Sungrow’s headquarters. Technical preparation during the initial commissioning phases, particularly regarding system integration and chiller operation, was identified as a key factor in avoiding delays.

Located near National Grid’s Hams Hall substation, the installation is designed to help balance the UK’s electricity supply and demand as the country increases its reliance on intermittent renewable energy. A second phase of the project is expected to expand total capacity to 400 MW / 1,424 MWh.

Once at full capacity, BW ESS expects the site to support the electricity requirements of approximately 1.3 million homes for up to 3.5 hours. This deployment follows previous collaborations between the two companies, including the Bramley BESS project in Hampshire.
