Supply chain constraints affect Nintendo physical game cartridge production

Key ROM chip supplier Macronix is scaling back gaming production, potentially driving up manufacturing costs for Nintendo’s physical media.

5 November 2026

Macronix, a primary supplier of ROM memory chips for Nintendo’s physical game cartridges, has signaled a strategic withdrawal from the gaming sector. The company’s latest quarterly report shows that ROM chip production has fallen by 39% over the past year, now accounting for only 5% of its business. The company is reallocating wafer capacity toward more profitable NOR and NAND flash memory chips, which are seeing surge demand driven by artificial intelligence applications.

Analysts note that this shift creates a supply bottleneck for Nintendo, which must now seek increased reliance on alternative suppliers like Rohm and Lapis Semiconductor. This transition carries the risk of rising production costs for physical media.

While Nintendo has recently stated it has no plans to discontinue physical cartridges, industry observers suggest that rising costs may eventually force publishers to increase retail prices for physical copies or shift toward lower-capacity, cost-effective cartridge designs to maintain margins.
