Supply Chain Visibility No Longer Sufficient; Decision-Making is Key

Modern supply chains face a new challenge: mere visibility into shipment status and potential delays is no longer enough. The focus must shift to rapidly converting information into actionable decisions, according to Brian Oxley in Inc. Magazine.

While tracking shipments once required multiple phone calls and uncertain information, today's technology provides real-time data on ocean freight, predictive ETAs, and port congestion. This enhanced visibility has saved companies significant costs and headaches.

The core issue is no longer information scarcity, but the ability to interpret it and make swift decisions. When a delay is detected, companies must quickly decide on a course of action: expedite other shipments, reroute cargo, adjust production schedules, or inform customers. Technology alone cannot make these crucial judgments.

Oxley notes that an excess of alerts and forecasts can lead to information overload, leaving organizations well-informed but uncertain about next steps. Decision speed is paramount. Once information is received, three factors are critical: how quickly the business impact is understood, whether the right person has the authority to decide, and how rapidly the organization can act on that decision. Otherwise, even a perfect decision made too late becomes a well-documented mistake.
