Survey: 80% of Americans Believe Businesses Raised Prices Unnecessarily

The 2026 Bentley-Gallup Business in Society report reveals a significant distrust in corporate pricing practices in the United States. The survey found that nearly 9 in 10 respondents reported that prices had increased over the past year.

More concerning, 80% of Americans believe businesses raised prices more than necessary to pursue higher profits. Nearly half of these respondents stated that prices rose "a great deal" more than required.

The Gallup study also asked what businesses should do when costs rise. Accepting lower profits was the most popular choice at 74 percent. About half suggested raising prices, and 40 percent proposed reducing the size or quantity of products.

Interestingly, lowering quality received only 5 percent support, and cutting employee pay or benefits garnered just 4 percent. The findings highlight a growing consumer skepticism regarding corporate motives behind price hikes.
