Survey: Two-thirds of Germans buy over-the-counter medicines locally

A recent representative survey conducted by Pharma Deutschland reveals that nearly two-thirds of Germans (62 percent) purchase over-the-counter (OTC) medications from local pharmacies. Only a quarter (23 percent) opt for online pharmacies, reinforcing the primary role of local establishments for these purchases. These findings align with a previous survey from May 2024, where 67 percent reported buying OTC drugs at physical pharmacies.

Dorothee Brakmann, General Manager of Pharma Deutschland, highlighted the combination of expert knowledge and product quality available at local pharmacies. She stated that these are essential for secure and effective healthcare provision. Brakmann urged policymakers to establish the right conditions to ensure the continued accessibility of pharmacies and their vital role in self-medication.

Brakmann further suggested that responsible self-medication could be enhanced by removing prescription requirements for suitable substances, thereby fostering greater patient autonomy. Pharma Deutschland represents the largest association of the pharmaceutical industry in Germany, comprising over 400 member companies.

The survey underscores the enduring significance of local pharmacies in Germany for OTC drug distribution and customer consultation, despite the growing trend of online retail.
