Sweden orders ground-based air defence system from Saab

Swedish defence and security company Saab has secured an order worth approximately SEK 1.2 billion for sensors and command systems for a ground-based air defence system (GBAD) intended for the Swedish Army's brigades. The order was placed by Sweden's Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).

The deliveries, which include Saab's Giraffe AMB radar system and an integrated command system for air defence (LSS Lv), are scheduled to take place between 2029 and 2030. These systems are designed to enhance Sweden's capability to detect and counter advanced airborne threats.

"We are proud to contribute to strengthening the ground-based air defence capability of the Army's brigades," stated Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab's Surveillance business area. He added that the systems will improve the ability to conduct air defence operations and represent an important recognition of Saab's technology.

The Giraffe AMB provides short- to medium-range capabilities for ground-based air defence, enhancing control within the airspace domain. The combination of a powerful radar and integrated command functionality offers troops a rapid situational awareness and enables effective responses to emerging threats in dynamic operational environments. This order builds upon previous deliveries from Saab to FMV.
