Axfoundation, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and industry partners have now released the country's first circular roadmap for solar panels. The initiative seeks to extend the lifespan of panels and their materials and improve their management.

The roadmap, named CircSolar, details how the condition of decommissioned solar panels can be assessed. The potential for continued use, repair, or recycling varies based on panel condition. The framework provides a clear process for managing these panels throughout the value chain, from removal to potential reuse or material recovery.

This project addresses the growing volume of solar panels reaching their end-of-life in the coming decades. Without a structured approach to circular management, these large quantities of material could pose a substantial environmental burden. The CircSolar roadmap aims to mitigate this by promoting circular economy principles within the solar energy sector.

By developing methods for testing, repairing, and recycling solar panels, the initiative intends to prevent the loss of valuable materials. This could also foster new business opportunities and reduce reliance on virgin raw materials, contributing to a more sustainable energy system.
