Swedish food industry leaders call for increased national production

Lantmännen, Arla, and other sector representatives urge policymakers to address Sweden's food trade deficit and reliance on imports.

4 November 2026

Lantmännen, Arla Sweden, Livsmedelsföretagen, LRF, and Scan Sverige have issued a joint call for action to increase Swedish food production. In a recent opinion piece published in Dagens industri, the organizations argue that the country's heavy reliance on imports undermines food security and exposes Sweden to volatility in global markets.

The current food trade deficit in Sweden stands at 94 billion SEK. Industry representatives claim that this figure highlights a lack of self-sufficiency that needs to be addressed through concrete policy changes to support domestic producers and manufacturers.

Beyond national security concerns, the industry points to potential growth in the job market. Data from the 'Grön uppväxling' (Green Upscaling) report suggests that expanding local production capacity could lead to the creation of approximately 19,000 new jobs within the sector.
