Swedish Public Sector Increases Cybersecurity Efforts Amidst Growing Threats
The cybersecurity maturity of Swedish public sector organizations has risen significantly in one year, with more now deeming their capabilities advanced. This shift is driven by increasing cyber threats and geopolitical uncertainty.

Swedish public sector organizations are stepping up their cybersecurity measures in response to escalating digital threats. A recent study commissioned by Nordlo from research firm Radar reveals that the proportion of public sector entities considering their cybersecurity capabilities advanced or mature has increased from 21 percent to 33 percent in just one year.
This development brings the public sector's cybersecurity maturity close to the national average, where 35 percent of all Swedish organizations report an advanced or mature level. Bengt-Göran Kangas, Head of Business Area Nordlo National, stated that cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue but a fundamental requirement for secure operations and public trust.
Increased investments in cybersecurity are attributed to factors such as heightened geopolitical uncertainty, a rise in cyberattacks across all sectors, and more stringent regulatory requirements. The study also found that 64 percent of Swedish organizations increased their cybersecurity budgets in 2025, with a growing share of IT budgets allocated to security.
However, Kangas cautioned that a greater focus on security investments might lead to the postponement of other digital initiatives, such as AI development. This potential trade-off could impact the level of services offered to citizens.
