Switzerland considering transit fee for Gotthard and San Bernardino routes

Switzerland is planning to introduce a new transit fee specifically for foreign vehicles using the Gotthard and San Bernardino routes to pass through the country without overnight stays. Both chambers of the Swiss parliament have expressed support for the proposal, paving the way for its potential future implementation.

Under the proposed plan, this new fee would be levied in addition to the existing vignette requirement. Estimates suggest the fee could be around 21 Swiss francs (approximately 23 euros) per transit. The system would likely involve automatic scanning of vehicle license plates upon entry and exit, with the intention of targeting only foreign travelers.

A primary goal of the new fee is to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly around the Gotthard Tunnel, which frequently experiences long queues during holiday periods. Swiss authorities note that approximately one-third of traffic crossing the Alps consists of through-traffic, which burdens infrastructure without providing significant economic benefits to the country.

The fee amount might be variable, potentially adjusted based on traffic density, time of day, and day of the week, aiming to flatten peak traffic loads. A precise introduction date has not yet been set, and the detailed development of the plan, along with potential international negotiations, could take several years. The matter may also be subject to a public vote.

The Gotthard Tunnel is one of Europe's busiest Alpine crossings, handling millions of vehicles annually. The San Bernardino Tunnel often serves as an alternative route. Currently, using Swiss motorways requires purchasing an annual vignette.
