SWR Adopts Software Playout with Rohde & Schwarz Pixel Power Solution
Südwestrundfunk (SWR) has implemented Rohde & Schwarz's Pixel Power graphics and playout solution, transitioning to a flexible, software-defined system for its broadcast operations.

German broadcaster Südwestrundfunk (SWR) has implemented Rohde & Schwarz's Pixel Power graphics and playout solution, marking a shift to a software-defined infrastructure. The new system will handle playout for SWR's own channels as well as for other ARD consortium members in southern Germany, including Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), and Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR).
As its previous playout system reached end-of-life, SWR sought a modern, software-based approach. A key requirement was the seamless integration of graphics and branding. Following extensive evaluation, SWR selected Pixel Power, a Rohde & Schwarz company, for its ability to provide a flexible and scalable solution.
The implementation utilizes Pixel Power's Gallium automation and StreamMaster signal processing software, running on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. This software-defined nature allows for precise configuration tailored to SWR's specific workflows. The solution supports on-premises, cloud, or hybrid deployments and includes remote access capabilities, enabling operations from remote locations.
The new system facilitates the management of live events and on-the-fly content adjustments, including the integration of live graphics for broadcasts such as lottery results or severe weather warnings. It also features text-to-speech functionality to enhance accessibility for visually impaired viewers during emergency alerts. SWR noted the system's expandability to meet evolving future requirements.
