T-Systems Marks 20 Years in Cloud Services

T-Systems, Deutsche Telekom's enterprise IT unit, is marking 20 years of its involvement in the development and use of cloud technologies. The company began virtualizing server infrastructures under the name "Dynamic Services" back in 2004. This positioned the subsidiary as one of Europe's early adopters, providing businesses with dynamically scalable IT resources even before the term "cloud computing" became widespread.

"The cloud is the foundation for digitalization and AI today. Data need a secure, scalable home for this," stated Dr. Ferri Abolhassan, CEO of T-Systems and a member of Deutsche Telekom's board. "With our long-standing experience in the European market, we ensure that customers can control their data sovereignly and design their digital transformation flexibly."

Today, T-Systems offers a wide range of cloud services to businesses and public authorities across Europe. Customers can opt for private clouds, the Open Telekom Cloud, multi-cloud solutions with partners like Microsoft, Google, and AWS, or hybrid models. T-Systems is also involved in European initiatives such as Gaia-X and the development of sector-specific "Data Spaces," including Catena-X, to facilitate secure and controlled data exchange.

Long-term clients include companies like Shell, Heineken, and DHL, who utilize customized cloud solutions for their global infrastructure modernization. Health insurance providers such as Barmer and AOK rely on T-Systems for digital identity solutions for millions of insured individuals, representing a key application for digital sovereignty on the company's Open Sovereign Cloud (OSC).

A cornerstone of T-Systems' infrastructure is its data center in Biere, Germany, which also celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024. With over 100,000 servers and approximately 970 petabytes of data, it is noted as one of Europe's most energy-efficient facilities. The company is also looking to the future by participating in the Europe-wide 8ra project (IPCEI-CIS), aiming to build an open and shared European cloud-edge infrastructure to advance digital services.
