Tamil Nadu allows Aadhaar authentication for Matrimony.com
The government of Tamil Nadu has permitted Matrimony.com to use Aadhaar authentication for user verification on its platform. The authentication process is voluntary and aims to prevent fraud.
The Tamil Nadu state government has officially allowed Matrimony.com to utilize Aadhaar authentication for verifying users on its matrimonial platform. The notification, issued by the state's Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department on August 28, 2026, was published in the Government Gazette on September 16, 2026.
This new policy aims to enhance trust and prevent fraud, including impersonation and matrimony-related scams, by displaying a verified user indicator on profiles. Matrimony.com will employ Aadhaar authentication through a "yes/no" response or eKYC, exclusively for users accessing its services.
The approval was granted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in consultation with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The notification marks Matrimony.com as the first private sector company in Tamil Nadu to receive such authorization.
This development comes amidst ongoing concerns about online fraud. While India's Supreme Court previously restricted private companies' use of Aadhaar data for Know Your Customer (KYC) purposes in 2018, rules were amended in 2025 to allow approved private entities to seek Aadhaar authentication for purposes of good governance. The Tamil Nadu notification specifies that the Aadhaar authentication is voluntary, and services must not be denied to users who refuse it. Alternative identification methods, including driving licenses, passports, and PAN cards, are also accepted.
