Tanzania Mandates Travel Insurance Amid Coverage Concerns
Tanzania now requires all foreign visitors to purchase government-approved travel insurance starting October 1, 2026. Experts at Squaremouth warn this mandatory coverage may have significant gaps.

Tanzania has implemented a new regulation requiring all foreign visitors to obtain government-approved travel insurance, effective October 1, 2026. This mandate applies even to travelers who already possess coverage through other means, such as credit cards or independent policies.
Travel insurance marketplace Squaremouth highlighted concerns regarding the adequacy of the mandatory coverage. According to their Q3 2026 Travel Insurance Trends Report, the average cost for a trip to Tanzania exceeds $24,000, making comprehensive protection crucial. Experts point to potential shortcomings in the mandated policy.
Publicly available details on the required insurance are limited. Information pertaining to the Zanzibar policy suggests significant omissions, including the absence of trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits. Furthermore, emergency medical coverage is capped at $50,000, falling short of Squaremouth's recommended $100,000 for medical expenses and $250,000 for medical evacuation.
Coverage for trip delays and missed connections is also reportedly absent. "Tanzania's required coverage provides basic protection, but with so much money invested in these trips, a more comprehensive travel insurance policy can better protect your investment and offer greater peace of mind," stated Chrissy Valdez, Senior Director of Operations at Squaremouth. Travelers are advised to compare policies to ensure adequate coverage for their journey.
