Target names first Chief AI Officer to remake shopping experience
Target has appointed Chandhu Nair as its first Chief AI Officer, signaling a strategic push to integrate artificial intelligence into its customer experience and operations. The move aims to enhance both customer-facing and employee-facing systems.

Retailer Target has appointed Chandhu Nair as its first Chief AI Officer, marking a significant step in its strategy to leverage artificial intelligence. The move is intended to enhance the shopping experience for customers and improve internal operations.
Nair joins Target from Lowe's, where he most recently served as senior vice president of stores, data, AI, and innovation. His background also includes nearly a decade at Staples and experience founding data analytics and business strategy startups.
"What excites me most is the opportunity to make AI real for the people who experience Target every day," Nair stated. He emphasized that the most impactful AI applications will be those that improve customer interactions, provide better tools for employees, and inform business decisions.
In conjunction with Nair's appointment, Purvi Shah, currently vice president of user experience design, is being promoted to a senior vice president role. Target believes that pairing AI's speed with human-centered design will elevate the overall shopping experience. The company's AI initiatives will encompass both customer-facing platforms and internal systems.
Target's decision to create a dedicated AI leadership role follows a growing trend across industries. While tech companies have been early adopters, many other sectors are now establishing Chief AI Officer positions to harness AI's potential. Target's move positions it to explore AI's benefits within the retail landscape.
