Target Shopping Trend Divides Parents Amid Back-to-School Season

A burgeoning social media trend is prompting parents to take their children to Target for back-to-school shopping, with a unique rule: children select a number of items equal to the grade they are entering. While this provides excitement for younger children, it is raising concerns among parents about potential costs, especially for older students.

Family influencers have widely adopted and shared videos of this trend, showcasing children's delight in picking out new goods. Target's official Instagram account has even acknowledged the trend with positive comments. However, for students entering higher grades, the total number of items and their associated cost can escalate quickly, leading to substantial shopping hauls.

The trend emerges as back-to-school spending continues to rise. Data from Deloitte predicted parents would spend an average of $661 per child on back-to-school items in 2025, an 8% increase from the previous year. Since 2019, average back-to-school expenditures have climbed by approximately 24%.

In response to these rising costs, Target has announced discounted pricing on many items, stating that 95% of its school supply deals are priced at or below last year's levels. While these discounts offer some financial relief, parents may need to carefully consider the added pressure of participating in this social media trend alongside essential school supply purchases.
