Target to Implement Points System for Employee Attendance Tracking
Beginning in September, Target will track unexcused absences and lateness for store and warehouse employees using a points system. Accumulating points can lead to termination if a threshold is met.

Retailer Target will implement a points system starting this September to track unexcused absences and lateness among its store and warehouse employees. Under the new policy, accumulating three points may require an employee to check in with their manager, while reaching 12 points can lead to termination.
Employees will accrue points for infractions such as being more than eight minutes late, missing a shift without manager approval, or failing to show up without prior notification. Any points accumulated will expire annually. The company states that consistent absenteeism or tardiness may impact an employee's standing.
The move comes after Target reported declining comparable sales for the fourth consecutive quarter. CEO Michael Fiddelke has outlined plans this year to refresh the company's stores and regain customer trust.
Similar employee attendance tracking policies are in place at other companies. Walmart has operated a five-point system since 2019, and Amazon has previously used tracking data to enforce its return-to-office mandates. However, some companies, like AT&T, have rolled back such tracking initiatives due to employee concerns.
