Tata Digital Posts Nearly $6 Billion Loss in FY26

Tata Digital, the digital services division of Indian conglomerate Tata Group, recorded a net loss of ₹4,974 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26). This represents a 7.9% increase in losses compared to the ₹4,610 crore loss reported in the prior fiscal year.

The substantial losses were primarily attributed to BigBasket, the group's online grocery platform, which continued to incur significant expenses and accounted for nearly 64% of Tata Digital's total losses. Despite these losses, Tata Digital's revenue saw a 11.9% increase, reaching ₹35,990 crore in FY26, up from ₹32,188 crore in FY25.

Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran noted that the Indian e-commerce market has rapidly shifted towards quick commerce, an area where BigBasket is adapting. He highlighted that Tata Digital's Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) has scaled to ₹46,515 crore within four years of its launch, indicating growth in transaction value.

Amid these financial challenges, Tata Digital has strategically pivoted its "super app" Tata Neu. The focus is now shifting from general offerings to consolidating financial services and loyalty programs. Chandrasekaran stated that the Tata Neu card has become a prominent co-branded credit card in India, and the platform will now emphasize financial services, aiming to tenfold its monthly transacting users in payments and expand into lending and insurance.

Most of Tata Digital's subsidiary businesses, including BigBasket, Tata 1mg (pharmacy and diagnostics), and Tata Payments, reported losses in FY26. BigBasket's B2C arm alone incurred a loss of ₹3,073 crore on a turnover of ₹8,223 crore. Tata 1mg's epharmacy and diagnostics arm lost ₹310 crore, while its technology arm made a small profit. Fashion e-commerce platform Tata Cliq and electronics retailer Croma also reported net losses. Tata Group's total investment in Tata Digital stood at ₹22,903 crore as of March 2026.
