Tata Power Commissions 72.5 MW Solar Facility for Tata Steel

Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar power project located in Kalasar, Rajasthan. The facility, operated through subsidiary TP Vardhman Surya Limited, provides direct renewable energy supply to Tata Steel to support its industrial decarbonization goals.

The solar farm is projected to generate 166 million units of electricity annually, offsetting approximately 118,856 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. The infrastructure incorporates 171,360 solar modules sourced from TP Solar Limited, aligning Tata Power’s manufacturing and generation capabilities.

This captive model is increasingly utilized by energy-intensive industries in India to bypass grid volatility and meet sustainability mandates. For Tata Steel, the integration of solar power serves as a primary method for lowering the carbon intensity of steel production.

Following this launch, TPREL’s total renewable energy portfolio reaches 12.3 GW, with 7 GW currently operational. The company continues to focus its development efforts in Rajasthan, which remains a core region for its large-scale utility projects.
