TDK unveils new display technology for smart glasses

Japanese component maker TDK has revealed the world's first smart glasses display module utilizing a "Meta-Optic Mirror" and direct retinal projection (DRP).

Japanese electronic component manufacturer TDK has unveiled a new display technology for smart glasses. The company announced the world's first smart glasses display module that combines a Meta-Optic Mirror with direct retinal projection (DRP). This new technology aims to address challenges related to the appearance and performance of smart glasses.

Traditional smart glasses display solutions often rely on waveguide or curved mirror systems, making components thick and costly to produce. TDK's Meta-Optic Mirror is a flat reflective element, just 150 nanometers thick, that changes the direction of light rays. This allows the use of DRP technology in thinner and more discreet eyewear.

DRP technology projects images directly onto the user's retina. Its advantages include a clear image regardless of the user's vision and reduced light leakage to the surroundings compared to waveguide solutions. TDK's new approach integrates the necessary reflective function for DRP into a thin, flat mirror, potentially making smart glasses resemble conventional eyeglasses in appearance.

The technology utilizes wafer fabrication processes common in the semiconductor industry, which could simplify manufacturing and lower costs. Currently, the system supports monochrome images, but TDK is actively developing a full-color display and plans for mass production within the next few years.
