Teal Health Secures FDA Authorization and $23 Million for At-Home Screening Device

Teal Health has achieved a significant milestone in women's healthcare, obtaining FDA authorization for its Teal Wand™ device, which enables at-home cervical cancer screening. The company also announced the closing of a $23 million funding round.

The funding will support Teal Health's mission to improve women's health outcomes by making screening more accessible and user-friendly. CEO and co-founder Kara Egan emphasized the importance of a consumer-focused design in the success of medical devices.

The Teal Wand™ was developed with an emphasis on user experience, featuring clear, visual instructions similar to premium consumer products, a departure from typical dense medical documentation. This approach yielded strong results in clinical trials, with an 80% acceptance rate among participants, significantly higher than the industry norm of around 10%.

FDA clearance was based on clinical study data demonstrating that samples collected via the Teal Wand™ matched clinician-collected samples in detecting HPV, the virus responsible for most cervical cancers. Research indicates that 86% of women would be more likely to stay current with screenings if offered an at-home option.

Teal Health operates as a telehealth medical practice, allowing patients to schedule virtual appointments, receive prescriptions for the device, and have results interpreted. This model aims to expand access but introduces regulatory and financial complexities across different states. J.P. Morgan has provided support in areas such as cash flow management and account setup.
