Teamfight Tactics Moves to Unreal Engine, Developer Apologizes for Bugs

Teamfight Tactics' transition to the Unreal Engine has caused technical issues, including bugs and performance problems. Developer Riot Games has apologized for the situation.

Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, has issued an apology regarding recent technical difficulties affecting its auto-battler game, Teamfight Tactics (TFT). Since the start of Season 18 in September 2023, TFT has undergone a significant engine migration from its proprietary Hextech engine to Epic Games' Unreal Engine. This transition has unfortunately led to a surge in bugs, performance bottlenecks, and other stability issues.

The development team acknowledged that the move to Unreal Engine was a strategic decision aimed at ensuring the game's longevity, as the previous engine was approaching its technical limitations. Despite prior postponements and testing phases, the final implementation has fallen short of player expectations. Reports include missing cosmetic items, delayed responses from the in-game shop, frequent frame rate drops, stuttering, and game crashes.

Riot Games has stated its immediate focus is on addressing the most critical issues that directly impact gameplay and player experience. These efforts include enhancing game stability, optimizing performance, reducing input lag, improving network latency, and clarifying visual elements. The company admitted to shortcomings in the rollout process while affirming the long-term viability of Unreal Engine, promising a more cautious approach to future updates.

The engine upgrade also introduces new minimum system requirements. Certain iOS devices with 2GB of RAM and Android devices with 2GB/3GB of RAM will no longer be supported. PC users will require Windows 10 (version 19041 or later), DirectX 11, and Shader Model 5.

Player progress data is intended to be preserved, however, game settings and customization options have been reset to default.
