Tech CEO Arrested Accused of Smuggling $300M in Nvidia Chips to China

US authorities have arrested Greg Lui, 38, CEO of Earthmade Computer, on charges of smuggling high-end computer servers containing export-controlled Nvidia chips into China. The Department of Justice stated that Lui allegedly used false paperwork to mask shipments of servers worth more than $300 million, knowing they were destined for China.

Lui is accused of conspiring with freight-forwarding firms in countries like Malaysia and Singapore to illegally divert chip shipments. The indictment specifies Nvidia's A100 and H100 GPUs. While not Nvidia's most advanced chips, these processors can handle significant data processing and train large language models.

The US government has expressed concerns that China's increased access to such chips could rapidly advance its artificial intelligence capabilities or bolster its military strength, posing a national security risk.

This arrest is part of broader efforts by US law enforcement to prevent the illicit transfer of advanced technology to China, particularly components that could enhance AI development or military applications.
