Tech Companies and Governments Respond to AI Development Slowdown Calls
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call for AI companies to slow the development of powerful frontier AI models has prompted varied reactions from tech leaders and governments worldwide.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has urged artificial intelligence companies to decelerate the development of increasingly potent frontier AI models. In a recent essay, Amodei highlighted that AI capabilities are advancing faster than safety measures, advocating for enhanced testing, independent evaluations, and international cooperation.
The proposal has elicited diverse responses from major tech firms and prominent figures. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed agreement, stating his company would grant independent evaluators employee-level access to its systems. Elon Musk and Google DeepMind Chairman Demis Hassabis have also voiced support for Amodei's perspective.
Amazon stated that progress and safety are not mutually exclusive, emphasizing the need for rigorous testing before releasing models. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman echoed Anthropic's focus on safety but questioned the company's framing of AI consciousness and welfare.
Other companies have adopted different stances. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes individual companies should assess their own risks and determine their pace of development. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang maintains that companies bear the responsibility for ensuring their AI technologies are safe.
Governments have also weighed in. China's Foreign Ministry called for an open and inclusive approach to AI, while the state-backed Global Times newspaper accused Amodei's proposal of being a "Cold War playbook" aimed at hindering China's AI progress. Chinese officials have also raised concerns about potential risks from advanced U.S. AI systems to their critical infrastructure.
