Tech Firms Urge Against 'Premature Restrictions' on Open-Weight AI Models
A coalition of AI companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta, has sent a letter to policymakers arguing against early limitations on open-weight AI models, citing risks to competition and innovation.
Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir, and more than 20 other technology companies have issued a letter urging policymakers to avoid "premature restrictions" on open-weight artificial intelligence models. The companies contend that such actions could "stifle competition or drive innovation overseas."
Open-weight AI models are freely downloadable and modifiable, fueling a recent debate within the tech industry. Chinese developed open-weight models have recently gained traction, challenging proprietary, closed models from American companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Concerns have been amplified by Chinese startup Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model, which reportedly outperforms some leading American AI offerings. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the administration would investigate potential intellectual property theft by Chinese companies, indicating a readiness to impose sanctions.
The tech companies' letter argues that open-weight models foster competition and ensure broader access to AI benefits. They also highlight that closed models are not inherently safer, as they can be breached or misused without detection, and concentrating advanced AI capabilities in fewer hands amplifies this risk.
OpenAI and Anthropic, both valued at nearly $1 trillion and preparing for potential IPOs, did not sign the letter.
