Tech Giants Hire AI Engineers to Prove Spending Will Pay Off
Amazon Web Services and Anthropic are significantly investing in hiring and training specialized AI engineers, known as "forward deployed engineers" (FDE). The goal is to demonstrate that billions invested in AI are yielding tangible business results.

Major technology companies, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Anthropic, are launching substantial hiring and training initiatives for specialized AI engineers, termed "forward deployed engineers" (FDE). This push aims to prove to investors that the massive investments in artificial intelligence are generating measurable business outcomes.
Recent market concerns about the sustainability of the AI boom have led to significant stock price declines for several AI-focused tech firms. In response, these companies are working to demonstrate that advanced language models can be practically applied within corporate processes.
AWS has committed $1 billion to its FDE initiative. Anthropic plans to train 10,000 FDEs by the end of 2027. OpenAI and Accenture, in partnership with Google Cloud, are also making considerable investments to expand their workforce of similar experts.
The FDE role demands deep technical expertise combined with an understanding of business processes and customer needs. Their task is to integrate AI solutions into existing enterprise systems, security requirements, and organizational structures, transforming promising AI experiments into practical applications.
Demand for these specialists has surged. In the U.S., FDE job postings increased from fewer than 200 in 2023 to over 7,300 in the first nine months of 2026. Salaries reflect this scarcity, with median pay rising significantly and being more than three times that of other roles.
